UN Day at Sandford International School

On October 22nd SIS celebrated the 65th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. It was a celebration of our diversity and the unified purpose which unites us just like United Nations. It was also a day to reflect upon the successes and challenges of the United Nations.

The celebration began with our Parade of Nations! We had almost 50 nations represented!

After a welcome speech by our Senior Manager, Ato Kumlachew Aberra, Dr. Adama E Coulibaly, the chief of Agricultural Production Systems Section, Food Security and Development Division of the UNECA spoke. In his speech, he reminded us of the challenge we face in living up to the ideals of the UN and our responsibilities as individuals.

Duri Abdurahaman, our Student Government President, spoke of the human rights challenges we face. He challenged each of us to live up to the promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Right.

Finally, after sharing food from many countries, different events such as cultural fashion show music and dances took place in secondary as well as in primary divisions.

ETHIOPIAN CRAFT DAY

From the 8th of November until the 11th of November 2010, all children from years 1-6 were involved in Ethiopian Craft Mornings.  The object of these mornings was to give children the chance to observe and experience a wide variety of traditional Ethiopian Crafts and performing also. It was hoped that the children would come to appreciate the diversity of the culture and the  talent of the individuals involved.

There were sixteen different activities on display ranging from wearing and spinning to hair plating and dancing.  There was also a juggler and stilt walker to keep children further entertained. The lower key stage 2 courtyard was full of displays and pesters reflecting all sides of Ethiopian Life. Against this backdrop children dressed in their traditional clothes were able to participate in the activities and hopefully take home with them the message that Ethiopia is a great country with a wonderfully rich culture.
